Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about distance.
How to Calculate
Enter your starting point and destination as city names, addresses, or coordinates (latitude, longitude). The calculator computes the straight-line distance using the **Haversine formula**, which accounts for Earth's curvature. It then estimates driving distance based on typical highway routes and calculates travel times using average speeds: ~65 mph for driving and ~550 mph for commercial flights. Results show distances in both miles and kilometers.
Formula & Method
Haversine formula: a = sin²(Δφ/2) + cos φ₁ × cos φ₂ × sin²(Δλ/2), then c = 2 × atan2(√a, √(1−a)), and distance d = R × c, where φ is latitude, λ is longitude, R is Earth's radius (3,959 miles or 6,371 km), and Δ indicates the difference between two points.
